A place for parents of children attending Lord Roberts Elementary in Vancouver, BC to get informed.

Category Archives: Inspire

For the week of January 13th-17th:

* Wednesday, Jan. 15th is our first PAC meeting of the new year. Please join us for a special guest speaker at 6:30pm in the school staff room.
Gillian Corless, a Lord Roberts parent from UBC’s Human Early Learning Partnership, will discuss the latest research findings on Vancouver students. Using the results from the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI), we will take a look at how Grade 7 students felt about living in the West End and going to Lord Roberts, including their:
• Social and Emotional Development
• Physical Health and Well-Being
• Connectedness to Adults and Peers
• School Experiences
• Use of After-School Time
These 5 are critical components of development and are strongly linked to well-being, health, academic achievement, and success throughout the school years and in later life.

We hope everyone can come join us for this time of learning about our students and how to help our students and our school.

*Thursday, Jan. 16th is Parent Coffee in the 4th floor counselor’s office at 9-10:15am.
GUEST SPEAKERS: Jean Fougere and Andrea Arnot from SACY
(School Aged Children and Youth Drug and Alchohol Prevention Initiative)

Andrea and Jean will discuss what SACY is all about and answer questions.

Have a great week!

You don’t need to be a writer to write for the Lord Roberts PAC blog.

Here are some tips:

Tone

Write as if you’re talking to another parent when picking up your children from school or after-school care. A conversational, friendly tone is what we’re looking for.

Length

Keep it short and sweet. Anywhere between 250-500 words (usually 2-5 paragraphs) works well for a post.

Focus

Because blog posts are relatively short, try to focus in on one unique or interesting part of the experience you’re writing about. What was the most interesting thing you learned? Did you meet one person who had a big impact on you? Did something strange or interesting happen? A well-focused post will be more interesting to read.

Visuals

Photos and videos are always welcome as part of your post, or on their own. Please take care when submitting either of other people’s children that you have parents’ permission to do so. Not everyone wants to share their child’s photo online.

Story types

People love to read about people. We want to know about your experience as a parent of a Lord Roberts student.

Some ideas:

  • You moved to Vancouver from another city and have tips to help other parents understand the school system.

  • You have great ideas of how to keep your children during pro-D days and holidays.

  • During a challenging year, you have learned the best way to communicate with your child’s teacher.

Whatever the topic, tell us your story.

Event

This can include events sponsored by the PAC. When appropriate, we still want to hear your story. Don’t just tell us who, what, when… why is this event important to you? What do you hope to get out of it? What are you looking forward to?

Video/slideshows

If you prefer to have your video or slideshow tell the story, that’s great! Just give us the basics about you – your name, what grade your child is in, and any relevant background info.

Please forward any pieces you wish to have published to kirstenhamelin@hotmail.com.
